St Joseph is situated in the northern Rhone. It sits directly opposite to the famous vineyards of Hermitage and Crozes Hermitage. The varietal is Syrah. The weather is similar to Southern California in that it is warm and they produce bigger wines. However, the difference in a Rhone wine is they tend to lend more toward the delicacy side, and the flavors are very elegant. These wines like to age and really head into a different dimension with time. I like to drink Rhone wines with 10 years of age. They usually exhibit strong blackcurrant and dark wild cherry aromas. Some mint and white pepper can be fairly prevalent. The mouthfeel is excellent and the volume gets narrower as the tasting concludes, so one is left with this sensation, that the wine has disappeared, but the flavors will linger for quite some time... excellent wine.
