Exceptionally pretty... Big and robust, but with lots of style a la francaise...
2017 was a brighter sunshine year in this part of France than the 2015 I stocked last year, en francais, plus ensoleille …. So more alcohol, bigger and more robust structure. I intend to really furrow into this area over the next few years as i firmly see huge opportunities here with regards to price /quality comparisons.
The Roc des Mates is one of the first wines made at the château. This wine is apt for cellaring and could be kept for another 10-12 years. A blend of containing 80% of the oldest Syrah plots on the property which are located at approximately 150 meters above sea level, on a terroir of limestone scree. Only 10% of Grenache and Mourvèdre are added to the blend. Aged in barrels for 18 months, the wine is distinguished by its wide range of aromas. The deep nose combines black fruit, hints of scrubland, mineralality, lightly toasted coffee. The ample, rich and ripe mouthfeel is supported by tight tannins and fresh acidity. It is a very powerful wine, good depth and a perfect balance. The wine has a pretty garnet color. The Cuvée flagship is emblematic of Château de Cazeneuve, it goes perfectly with red meats and game. Please serve at 60F and no more than 64F, I suggest a decant for up to 2 hours before drinking, kept in a dark environment, and good glasses. The trick with the better wines is to use good wine glasses, and only fill perhaps 1-2 ounces at most in the glass, that way you can swirl… make sense ?
It is very important to stick to the temp guidelines, these wines show their delicacy at the lower temp levels, allowing them to come up is vital and will make the drinking experience so much more enjoyable.
