St Romain in Burgundy.
I am importing these gorgeous whites from the village or Climat known as St Romain behind Auxey Duresses. Does that mean anything to you ? The stretch of land between Dijon and Santenay is known as the gold coast or La Cote d’Or, the best stretch of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the world.
The vineyard of St Romain covers approximately 135 hectares and if you do the math, let's say that's 575 cases / hectare * 135 hectares equals 78,000 cases per year between all of the producers on the appellation. That is not very much. I find the wines to be substantially mineral reflecting the high quality marl soils (Calcium Carbonate) superbly delicate if chilled to the right temperature. They go well as an aperitif, and have enough weight to go with a good lobster or shellfish. They both see wood in maturation, and during maturation they are left on the lees. By the way a very important point to make, this is one tiny appellation within a larger network of different appellations in Burgundy. I would love to explain this to you one day. What you will learn to appreciate is the weight of each different white you taste, the minerality and their acidity…. All combined into one word for me, which is the weight…
White Burgundy is all the rage, there is a reason for that. It is very hard to find a climate which is not too hot as Chardonnay performs better with moderate temperatures. St Romain is close to St Aubin, Puligny and Chassagne, then of course you can also find some Meursault. These villages are the very best white wines in the world. The reason being is climate, aspect, limestone soils with a high PH which allow the transfer of nutrients, and LOVE…. Enjoy
